SICKLER RECEIVES LETER GIVING HER ACCOUNT OF HOW HER HUSBAND MET DEATH DIRVER OF CAR UNDER ARREST FORCED MORTORCYCLE RIDERS INTO HIGH SIDE OF CANON ROAD SICKLER FUNERAL HELD MONDAY The first details of the mortorcycle accident in which her husband lost his life on June 20 near San Diego, California, were received in letters Monday by Mrs. William R. Sickler, who with her two children, has been spending the summer here in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Jeffers. Mr. Scikler, who was formerly a resident of Sciola vicinity, north of Villisca, was a jailor and secret service man in Southgate, a suburb of Los Angeles. One letter to Mrs. Sickler from a friend, state Mr. Sickler and his cousin, Harold Lloyd, both of whom were on the motorcycle and both of whom were injured, were run into by a car driven by a colored man, who crowded them into the side of a mountain on canon road between Southgate and San Diego. Mrs. Sickler, who has traveled over that road states there is a drop of several thousand feet from the road to the bottom of the canon at the point where the accident occurred. The driver of the car was located after the accident and placed under arrest. The following letter was received Monday by Mrs. Sickler from M. M. Aijian of Pasadena, California, manager of an investment office there, who road with Mr. Sickler in the car which took him to the La Julia Hospital following the collision in which he was fatally injured: "I wish I were in a position to give you good news, yet, however unpleasant the news is I promised him to write. And I hesitate wondering if you have received the shocking news of the accident." "Last Saturday, June 20, we were driving to San Diego in an automobile. I think it was half way down there when we noticed two men on one motorcycle. We noticed them several times on the road that afternoon. The last time they passed our machine was about 7 o'clock near a small town called Cardiff." "A few minutes later we noticed crowds gathering on the road and thinking there was an accident at which we might assist we stopped. But what a sight." I shall never forget it. The driver of the motorcycle, a young officer, I think his name was Lloyd was down on his back with one leg broken below the knee and he was bleeding badly. I call an acquaintance of mine who happened to come there, and we put this young man in his machine to be taken to the nearest hospital." "Then I thought of his companion, walked back to the road about half a city block, and they had him already in a big car, ready to start for the hospital. They wanted some one to sit by this man in the car, so I volunteered to go. I sat down by him, holding his broken arm in place. His eyes were closed most of the time. He asked a question about his wounds and one of the first things he told me on the way to the hospital was as follows; "If I don't come through this accident, will you notify my folks. My name is William Sickler and he spelled it for me, from Vilisca, Iowa. I have a wife and two children." "I promised him I would write to them, trying to comfort him by telling him that very probably he was not very badly injured and would pull through. To this he did not answer. Several times he asked about the distance to the hospital and where we were on the road. And later, directing his words to the lady sitting by the driver, he said: "Lady, will you please sent a telegram to my wife." "She did not hear it. I believe, so I asked him, "Do you think your wife can come?" To which he replied, "I don't know." "Later on when I put my hand on his forehead, he asked me if I was a doctor?" Undergoes Operation A letter from Lloyd's wife to Mrs. Sickler states Lloyd sustained a compound fracture of one of his legs and one foot was badly mashed. It was necessary to amputate some of his toes. Sickler Funeral Monday The body of Mr. Sickler married here Monday morning on No. 10, and the funeral was held that afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Methodist Church, with Rev. J. L. Boyd in charge the service. The pall bearers were Ira Allen, Herbert and Edward Sickler, Earl Martin, and W. J. Langdon, and the singing was by Mr. and Rms. F. E. Shane, Miss Georgia Winter, and Roy Means, with Miss Erma Edwards at the organ. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Mrs. Sickler expects to leave this week for her home in Southgate to look after her affairs there. She will then return to Villisca and will make her home here.
