Read More	William Ronald Briggs, 95, of Ottumwa, died March 17, 2021 at Hospice House in Ottumwa. He was born April 1, 1925 in Centerville to Wilbur Clay and Myrtle Wise Moss Briggs. He married Marilyn Owings November 25, 1948 in Ottumwa. An Ottumwa resident most of his life, Bill served with the U.S. Navy in WWII, earning the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 battle stars. He fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and was a gun captain aboard a seaplane tender. Bill was a meat cutter for Supply Food Store (now Hy-Vee), transferring from Centerville to Ottumwa. He also worked for Buehler’s and Fareway, retiring in 1989. In his later years, Bill worked for Ottumwa Regional Health Center in housekeeping and maintenance and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, serving as president of parish council, fellowship chairman and was past president of Izaak Walton League and a member of the Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bill enjoyed playing his harmonica, going to Knoxville Raceway with his brother, Junior, birdwatching and woodworking, especially making bird houses and bird feeders. Surviving is his wife, Marilyn; 5 sons, Terry (Jean) Briggs of Rochester, MN, William “Bill” (Julie) Briggs of Eldridge, Joe (Rose) Briggs of Monroe, Bob (Catherine) Briggs of Davenport and Dan (Laura) Briggs of Pella; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 7 brothers, Ancel Briggs, Kenneth Briggs, Gerald Briggs, Bob Briggs, Tom Moss, Wilbur “Junior” Briggs and an infant brother; 3 sisters, Phyllis Smith, Elizabeth Adair and Mary O’Leary; and a great-grandson, Timothy Briggs. Open visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 19th at Reece Funeral Home. Limited family will be present to greet friends from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. Private Christian Wake services will be held and may be viewed on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page at 5 p.m. Friday, March 19th. Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 p.m. noon Saturday March 20th at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. For those unable to attend, you may watch live on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military honors conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties or Juvenile Diabetes Association.
