Description	:	William R. Fisher was born in McConnellsville, Morgan county, Ohio, January 23, 1848, where he grew to manhood. He was just a stripling of a boy when the war broke out in 1861, but before the war ended he grew large enough, though not of soldier age, and enlisted in Co. D, 90th Ohio, Inft., in February 1864, and served about eighteen months. He was married to Miss Mary A. McGrew in 1868, who with two sons, Bert of Topeka and Ivan of Portland, Oregon, survive him. Mr. Fisher came first to Holton in 1870, remaining a year and then... Read More	William R. Fisher was born in McConnellsville, Morgan county, Ohio, January 23, 1848, where he grew to manhood. He was just a stripling of a boy when the war broke out in 1861, but before the war ended he grew large enough, though not of soldier age, and enlisted in Co. D, 90th Ohio, Inft., in February 1864, and served about eighteen months. He was married to Miss Mary A. McGrew in 1868, who with two sons, Bert of Topeka and Ivan of Portland, Oregon, survive him. Mr. Fisher came first to Holton in 1870, remaining a year and then returned to Ohio. Eight years later he came to this city where he permanently resided for a quarter of a century, and where he was actively engaged in business during that time. The lines of business in which he was active were the livery business, banking and auctioneering. He was one of the best auctioneers in this section of the state, and perhaps called more stock sales than any other man. In 1906 he became interested in matters out in Norton county. Those matters included large farming interests, and the First National Bank of Norton, which he helped organize and of which he was the first president. In 1908 he moved to Topeka and with his son, Bert, opened up an office as agents of the International Life Insurance Co. While at Norton he united with the Presbyterian church .... Several months ago a fatal disease, diabetes, which had been threatening his health for some time previous fastened upon him, which rapidly sapped his strength and finally ended his life at this home in Topeka last Friday evening. Mr. Fisher was one of the largest men physically in Jackson county, weighting some 350 pounds. Notwithstanding his excess of flesh he was very active and possessed of great physical strength. When he weighted well up to 300 pounds he would run foot races with and win from the swiftest runners .... The Holton Masons, members of the G. A. R., and a delegation of the Odd Fellows and Rebecca's met the train and a procession several blocks long went directly to the cemetery .... John L. Fisher, of Pittsburgh, Pa., the only brother of the late W. R. Fisher, is in Holton this week. He came west to attend the funeral of his brother. There is but one other member of the Fisher family now living, a sister, Mrs. Amanda Wingat. She came west twenty-five years ago and is now living in Wichita. There were but three in the family, W. R. being the oldest. They were all born in Ohio. J. L. Fisher came to Holton from the first time about 40 years ago and has not been here since. Then the nearest railroad station was at Netawaka, ten miles from Holton, and he walked that distance several times in order to take the train .... The Holton Recorder, September 7, 1911. ....
