Brown was born December 8, 1841, in Ross county, Ohio; died February 15, 1923, at Hiawatha, Kansas, aged 81 years, 2 months, 7 days. He lost his mother when he was 10 years of age, after which he made his home with his sister, Mrs. Jane Pricer. He had 4 brothers, 6 sisters, 2 sisters living to mourn his loss. At the age of 18 he united with the South Salem Presbyterian church in Ohio. At the call of his country he enlisted in the Civil war and served through the 4 years. He was wounded at the battle of Chattanooga, spent 3 months at home recuperating. In 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Frances Middleton. Soon after his marriage he with his wife moved to Holt county, Missouri, where they lived for 2 years. They moved to Brown county, Kansas in 1868, settled on the farm where he has lived ever since. Five children were born into this home. One died in infancy; one daugher, Mrs. Hugh Donley, passed on August 11, 1913. Mrs. Brown passed to her reward in 1913. Three children remain to mourn his loss: Mrs. L.A. Potter, Todd Brown, both of Hiawatha; Mrs. Leighton Brown of Yampa, Colorado. Mr. Brown united with the Presbyterian church of Hiawatha, August 25, 1872, as one of the charter members. For more than 50 years he was a faithful member. His going takes the last of that little company which laid the foundations of the Presbyterian work in this community. He rests from his labors, and his works follow him. Note: Another obituary says that he fell December 8, 1922 at a celebration of his 81st birthday. He was not confined to his bed, but his health failed from that point on.
