Description	:	1864 - 1866 Second California Cavalry Company H - Capt. Daniel Mclean William Samuel Spence was enlisted by Captain Daniel McLean and and was mustered by Captain A. Jones Jackson, Provost Marshal, Middle District of California, into Company H, Second Regiment of Cavalry, California Volunteers, at San Francisco California, December 15, 1864. At his enlistment William stated that he was born at Liverpool England, (Birkenhead England), and he was 21 years old (he was actually 17 years old). and by occupation he was a Shoemaker. Doctor Levi Cooper Lane, Surgeon of Board of Enrollment, was the Examining Surgeon of Recruit Spence. During March, 1865, Private Spence was on Provost Guard at Camp Union, Sacramento, California. During January and February, 1866, he was on escort duty to Major General Irwin McDowell in Arizona Territory. Private Spence was mustered out at Drum Barracks, Wilmington, Los Angeles County, California, April 20, 1866. (Spence Compiled Military Service Record, NARA; Orton, p. 266) Daniel McLean and and was mustered by Captain A. Jones Jackson Provost Marshal, Middle District of California, into Company H, Second Regiment of California Volunteers, at San Francisco California, December 15, 1864. (Before, he severed in Utah in command of Company H Under Colonel PATRICK EDWARD CONNOR). Captain McLean was wounded in the hand, but kept on until stopped by a debilitating thigh wound.
