Thompson The Elder community mourns the loss of a highly respected resident in the person of William Samuel Thompson, whose death took place at his home on lot 25, 5th line, east, Mono, on Monday, August 16th. The end came after a lingering illness resulting from nerve trouble and high blood pressure. Deceased was born in 1852 on the lot on which he was living , when he departed this life. In Mr. Thompson's young days he was a leader in the singing in St. Matthew's Church, of which he has long been a steadfast member, and where while in health he was always to be seen in his pew at the services on the Lord's Day. He filled the office of churchwarden for fourteen years and in 1885 was one of the men who helped to haul the material for the building of the present church. In the days of horse-power threshing the late Mr. Thompson threshed over the area of country extending from Hockley to Rosemont and west as far as the Prince of Wales Road. He also ran the first steam threshing engine in the Elder neighborhood. In 1893 the deceased married Miss Elizabeth Stone, daughter of the late John Stone, of Mono Centre. He is survived by his wife and seven sons, John Lytle, of Primrose, Joseph S., of Mono Mills, Trueman, of Rosemont, Maitland, at home, Stanley, of Mono Mills, George M., who has just obtained a commercial diploma after taking a course in the Orangeville Business College, and W. Edmund S., at home. The surviving brothers and sisters are Martin and Gabriel Thompson, of Shelburne, John, of Violet Hill, Mrs. Jake Law, Primrose, and Mrs. James Law, Mono Centre. The funeral, which was very largely attended, was held by motor to Burns' Church cemetery, Mono Centre. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. P. C. Howard, rector of St. Mathew's Church. The six oldest sons were the pallbearers. Among the beautiful floral tributes, indicative of the high esteem in which the departed man was held, were a broken wheel from the wife and family, a pillow from the brothers, a spray, Miss A. Stone, sprays, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Law, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. H. Stone, and gates ajar from Mr. and Mrs. James Law. Among the friends present from a distance were Miss Stone, Toronto, Mrs. W. E. H. Stone and daughter, Brampton, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Thompson, Messrs. James Thompson, Wm. Newton and Beatty Lewis, Mrs. Cotton and Miss Stone, Orangeville.
