Read More	William Sherman Arterburn Died Saturday After A Brief Illness Prominent Farmer of Center Township; Funeral Held Tuesday William Arterburn, a long time resident of Mills County and prominent farmer of Center Township, passed away at his home northwest of Malvern, Saturday evening, April 14, following a brief illness. He had been in poor health for some time, but the last illness was sudden and death rather unexpected. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the late home, conducted by the Rev. M. A. Banker of the Hillside church. A special choir, R. W. Criswell and J. R. McClymond, Mrs. Harry Stone, and Mrs. L. A. Talbott, with Mrs. G. S. Eacrett as accompanist, sang. Burial was made in the Emerson Cemetery. The pall bearers were Charles Egloff, Albert Rickabaugh, Orville Pryor, Eric Edlund, Frank Howard, Andrew Noah, W. E. McGrew, and F. M. Weak. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors come to pay their last respects to this man whom all respected. Many beautiful flowers testified to the love and esteem of friends and relatives. William Arterburn was born in Kentucky, March 11, 1865, the youngest son of Elias and Nacky Arterburn. He died at his home near Malvern, April 14, 1929. When but five years of age, he moved with his parents to Iowa, locating first near Dubuque. Later they moved to Kansas and after a stay there, returned to Iowa, locating near Essex, and then to Mills County northeast of Strahan in the old Asbury neighborhood. The years of his early manhood were spent in the vicinity where he prepared the nucleus of his future home. It was here that he was married to Miss Leola Canedy, December 23, 186 and began with her on a rented farm in this vicinity to establish a home for his future life. In 1899 he purchased a farm in Anderson township where they made their home for a number of years. He sold this in 1920 and bought the fine farm four miles northwest of Malvern which has since been their home. All who knew him could appreciate his high standard of honesty and fairness in his dealings with his fellow man. He was courageous and fearless when duty demanded, kind hearted and sympathetic when trouble came to neighbor or friend. He can be numbered among Mills County's best farmers. His fine country home stands as a monument to his labors and a remembrance for those he loved. Happy he was that he could provide and they could enjoy those pleasures. He loved to mingle with his friends and to enjoy the pleasures of life with them. He was ever loyal to his friends as is attested by their many expressions of sympathy and all testify to that sturdy manhood that marked his career. Mr. Arterburn is survived by his beloved wife and five children, John of Council Bluffs, Ollie and Mrs. Ila Boles who lived near him, and Elva and Elwin at home; and two grandchildren, three brothers, and one sister. One child died in infancy. His sudden death was a shock to the community. His familiar face and jolly spirit will be missed by his friends and associates.
