Description	:	William Stemm William the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Stemm, was born in the year 1864. His childhood years were spent in Center county, Pa. In 1876 he moved to Nebraska with a family by the name of Armagast, where they lived for a short time, thence moving to western Iowa. Read More	William Stemm William the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Stemm, was born in the year 1864. His childhood years were spent in Center county, Pa. In 1876 he moved to Nebraska with a family by the name of Armagast, where they lived for a short time, thence moving to western Iowa. From here he went to Lucas county, Iowa and lived on a farm 10 miles north of Lucas for 8 years. On September 12, 1888, he was united in marriage to Sarah Frances Nyswonger, and they moved on a farm southwest of Lacona, where they lived for 30 years. Six children were born to this union. Mr. Stemm was active in the affairs of his community and acted as school director for many years. In 1894 he first heard the restored gospel preached and later he assisted in erecting a new church and with Frank Weld, he helped haul the first load of stone for the foundation. In 1908 he united with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, from which he never wavered. In 1919 they moved to Lamoni for educational and church privileges where Mr. Stemm enjoyed life as he cared for his orchard, cows and garden. He enjoyed his neighbors and was ever ready to lend a helping hand when needed. He felt it his duty to be at home much with their son who was left in a critical condition from a siege of infantile paralysis at the age of 2. This made him a favored son. A second grief came in the death of their daughter, Maggie, in 1932; from this he never fully recovered. His few smiles seemed as sad as tears but he kept going until health failed. The third grief came when our country was taken in war. He always kept posted by paper and radio, often wishing his son from camp could come and help care for him. This not being possible, he provided him with a wheelchair, which gave his father much comfort from June till November. On December 14 he became very ill needing constant care. His children were called and were with him at his passing on Thursday. December 23. He leaves to mourn, his faithful companion and five children: Mrs. Leta Shakespeare, Independence, Mo.; Charley, Lacona; Theressa Spaulding, Weldon; Otto, at home; William Everett, Camp Maxey, Texas; and nine grandchildren, as well as many friends. Services were in charge of Arthur Lane, assisted by A. L. Keen. Interment was at Rose Hill cemetery. The following poem was written by Mrs. Stemm at the passing of her husband: A father has been taken from the home, His body laid at rest. His spirit flown to the heavenly home Where God has deemed it best. He may not only find his Savior there, But his parents whom he did not know, And other relatives as well. The Master may have willed it so. He will be missed by his earthly friends. In the home the vacant chair To the family will bring most bitter grief To know he is not there. We bow our heads to God's goodwill, Whatever that may be, And try the promise to fulfill And meet in the great Eternity.
