Their usefulness in the immediate speciﬁc labors they perform can be deﬁned by metes and bounds, but the good they do through the forces they put in motion and through the inspiration of their presence and example is immeasurably an inﬁnite gauge or standard of value. William Trautman Bennett, one of the best known and most progressive of the younger generation of attorneys of Marshall county, is a man of this type; and in his life, as indeed, every life of honor and usefulness, there is no dearth of interesting situations and incidents, and yet in summing up such a career the writer needs must touch only on the more salient facts, giving the keynote of the character and eliminating all that is superﬂuous to the continuity of the narrative. Mr. Bennett has led an active and eminently useful life, not entirely void of the exciting, but the more, prominent facts have been so identiﬁed with the useful and practical that it is to them almost entirely that an biographer refers in the following paragraphs. Mr. Bennett was born in Edgar county, Illinois, October 5, 1876, and he is the son of Sampson M. and Viola (Trautman) Bennett, the father born in Ohio and the mother in Illinois. William Trautman, the maternal grandfather, who was reared in Kentucky, was a plantation owner, but his property was devastated and lost during the war between the states, which resulted in his moving to Illinois in order to escape trouble, in view of the fact that he was an abolitionist. Sampson M. Bennett, the father, spent his early life in Ohio and Illinois, and in 1881 he left the latter state and came to Marshalltown, Iowa. For many years he was one of the best known stock men in the county, his life being spent chieﬂy in buying, feeding and selling stock, in which he secured a competency. He was a man of excellent business capacity and or exemplary character. His death occurred in North Dakota in 1899. His family consisted of three children, William T., of this review; Mrs. Isabella White and Mrs. Elona Snodgrass, both living at Interior, South Dakota. William T. Bennett received his early education in the local schools, graduating from the Marshalltown high school in 1894. He began life for himself by working in the grocery store of Andrews & Hoyt, with whom he remained just six years to the day, his long service being a criterion of his ﬁdelity to duty, his honesty and industry. Although he mastered the ins and outs of merchandising, he seemed to have a natural bent to the legal profession and during the last two years that he was in the store he studied law under E.F. Binford, well known local attorney. During this time Mr. Bennett had charge of the collections for the ﬁrm with which he was identiﬁed. He made rapid progress in the assimilation of Blackstone and other time- honored authorities, and on January 17, 1900, he was admitted to the bar, and subsequently formed a partnership with his preceptor, Mr. Binford, which partnership continued successfully until 1905, in which year Mr. Binford removed to Kenmere, North Dakota, since which time Mr. Bennett has practiced alone, with ever increasing success and taking a high rank among the leading legal lights of central Iowa. He is a master of legal science in all its ramiﬁcations, for he has ever been a profound student, tireless in his research work and persevering in his preparation of cases. The common law, the statutes of Iowa, the history, progress and growth of jurisprudence, as well as the higher and more abstruse principles of equity, are all completely at his command. In argument Mr. Bennett is clear, forcible and convincing, as well as coherent and entertaining, his irreproachable personal character and untarnished honor giving him great weight with juries and his recognized ability and learning equally impressing the bench. Politically, Mr. Bennett is a Republican and while he takes the interest of a fair-minded and loyal citizen in all movements having for their object the betterment of local conditions, he has not been a seeker after public ofﬁce or its emoluments. Fraternally, he is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Mr. Bennett was married to Edna Waltemeyer on February 16, 1905. She is a lady of strong, pleasing characteristics. Her birth occurred near Melbourne, Iowa, and she is the daughter of Jacob Waltemeyer and wife, one of the earliest pioneer families of Marshall county.
