Sterling, one of Crisfield's old and highly respected citizens, died at the General and Marine hospital last Saturday morning, after. an illness of several weeks. Mr. Sterling was born near what is now the city of Crisfield, on Aug. 23rd, 1844, and would have been 78 years of age on his next birthday. He was the son of the late Clement Ross Sterling and Leah Sterling. His primary education was received in the public schools near his home, after which he attended Dickinson Seminary, at Williamsport, Pa. After completing his education Mr. Sterling taught school for awhile and then engaged in merchandising. For many years previous to his death he was engaged in the jewelry business on lower Main street, this city. Mr. Sterling was popularly known to a wide circle of friends as "Billy Clem" and "Pap Sterling," affectionate terms applied to him by a legion of acquaintances who held him in high esteem. He was one of the pioneers of Crisfield and was actively identified with the early growth and development of the town. In his passing, Crisfield loses an old landmark who proved a high example of good citizenship, and who justly earned the position of respect and esteem in which he was held by all who knew him. The deceased was one of the founders of Chesapeake Lodge, No. 147, A. F. & A. M. of Crisfield and was prominent in Masonic circles for many years. He was made a Mason in 1877 when the lodge held its meetings in the old Brewington building, and after giving faithful service in several positions he was elected Worshipful Master of the lodge in 1883. Mr. Sterling filled this position so efficiently and was so popular with his Masonic brethren that he was chosen for this exalted place seven times, a record which no other Mason in Chesapeake lodge can show. He was also secretary of the local lodge for seventeen years, and served one term as President of the Past Masters Association of Somerset, Worcester and Wicomico counties. Mr. Sterling was a widower, his wife having preceded him in death several years ago. For many years he resided at his home on what is now Main street extended, but about two years ago he sold this property and has since resided at the Commercial hotel, and in Asheville, N. C., with his neice, Mrs. Dolly Savage, who survives him. Funeral services were held from Mt. Pleasant M. P. church on Tuesday last, with Rev. Chas. M. Elderdice officiating.
