His father was an Englishman who'd been a British soldier and served under the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo. His father came to America as a young man. William's mother was a native of Ireland and came as a child to America. William's Grandfather Walker served as a British soldier in the American Revolutionary War and surrendered with Lord Cornwallis' Army at Yorktown. William Walker was a single man from Niles, Michigan when he came with his brothers-in-law Norman Archer and Richard M. Lewis to Audubon County, Iowa. He was a prosperous farmer. He married in February 1857 to Nancy Jane Bowen, the daughter of William H. H. and Eliza (Watson) Bowen. Their 7 children were: John Edgar, married Ida Van Slyke; Laura, married James D. Barhan; Ulysses Schuyler, married Louisa Marsh; Lulu May,, married James E. Rendleman; Olive Marie, married Ralph D. Hawks; Eva Jane, married Charles W. Jenkins; and Jay Grant, married Jessie Pratt and Bessie Cutler. In his later years, he was a merchant in Exira, Iowa. He was a Republican, and held various township offices, town clerk, trustee, and school treasurer. He was also a Representative in the Iowa Legislature, 1888-1890. He began his life with small means, and by work and attention to his business, he prospered and became a leading citizen. At his death, he owned 1500 acres of land. He was a member of Exodus Lodge #344, A.F. & A.M. He died in Exira on 7 Novembeer, 1899. His wife died in February 1894. Contributor: #47927883
