Adella St., died at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines where he had been a patient for the past month. The son of William and Mercy Ellen Porter Johnston, he was born Sept. 29, 1892, at Indianola. He had been a resident of Ottumwa nearly all his life. He had worked at the Tower Majors and Hall Candy factories. He served in World War I from Feb. 22, 1918, to April 3, 1919. His marriage to Ethel Kelley was Sept. 26, 1923, in Ottumwa. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Bill Johnston of Ottumwa; two grandchildren; one brother, Robert R. Johnston of Ashland, Ore.; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Chapin of Los Angeles, Calif. He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers. Johnston, 78, of 614 South Adella, who died at 6 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Reece Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry LaVelle of Wesley Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Shaul Cemetery. O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion will be in charge of military services at the grave. American Legion members will serve as pallbearers.
