Description	:	CIVIL WAR VETERAN William Wooding was born in New Jersey per family records. By 28 March 1862, he claimed residence in Keokuk, Iowa, where he enlisted in the Union Army. He served with B Company, 17th Infantry Regiment, Iowa. He mustered out at Davenport, Iowa on 5 May 1865. The same year that he enlisted in Iowa, his son Uriah was born in Washington, Kansas. He served with B Company, 17th Infantry Regiment, Iowa. He mustered out at Davenport, Iowa on 5 May 1865. The same year that he enlisted in Iowa, his son Uriah was born in Washington, Kansas. [source: descendant Kris Underhill] "W. W. Wooding enlisted at Keokuk, IA, March 25, 1862. Went to St. Louis and drew arms then started for Shiloh where we landed just after the great battle. In May we besieged Corinth until it's evacuation. Then to the battle of luha(sp?) Sept. 19. And on the 3 and 4 of Oct to the great battle of Corinth. all the above travel in 5 months ending in Oct. 1862. Then we went to Grand Junction, Guntown, Baeyarer(sp?), Holly Springs, Memphis, Helena, Yazos Pass, Milligans Bend, Grand Gulf, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, Jackson Miss. and the siege of Vicksburg. Thence to the battles of Chattanooga, Look Out Mountain, Dalton and Tilton, GA. where my command was captured, Oct. 1864 and my brother Uriah taken prisoner to Florence, S.C, where he died Feb. 20, 1865. Then to Resara(sp?), Atlanta and on with "Sherman to the Seat" to Savannah. Thence north to Columbia where I got the silk dress I brought home. Then I started for home through Beaufort, New Bend, Norfolk, Roanoke, IA, Fortress Monroe, Baltimore, Harrisburg, Fort Wayne, Chicago, Davenport, Keokuk, Ottumwa and home at last in Oreleans App. Co. IA (Appanoose Co.) I also was in many other places, skirmishes, fired into by gunboats etc, etc. that time has dimmed my memory of just now." Census records find William Wooding working as a laborer in Burlington County, New Jersey in 1850. He was living with Theodore Miller, another laborer. By 1870, he had relocated to Washington County, Kansas, with $80 in personal estate. His niece Naomi and his son Uriah were listed as both being eight years old; his daughter Julia was listed as 4 years old. William's birthplace is listed as Indiana by the census taker, which is an error as William was born in New Jersey. He was in Washington state prior to 1909. William had been a farmer up to the time of his "last sickness", according to his obituary. He was 85 years old and died at the Bay View Hotel in Charleston (an area of Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington). The burial was conducted by Butterworth & Sons mortuary. His obituary indicates a surviving daughter, Jennie Ball, also living in Charleston. Other children are not mentioned; however, his son Uriah was known to be living in Seattle in 1909. His tombstone is located in the G.A.R. lot in Ivy Green cemetery on Naval Avenue in Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington.
