Cantril, a pioneer of Douglas county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James J. Elliott, at Glen Grove, on Saturday. The deceased was 82 years old, and for several years had been practically helpless as a result of a paralytic stroke. Mr. Cantril was one of the early settlers in Douglas county and at one time owned a fine ranch in the Cherry Creek valley. When the county was divided in 1872, there were many who favored Mr. Cantril's ranch as the location for the new county seat. With that in view Mr. Cantril erected a court house building and gave it to the county. The lumber came from a sawmill which he owned. Later, when Castle Rock was chosen for the county seat, the building was taken down and moved here, serving the county until the new stone court house was erected some 15 years later. The building still stands at the corner of Wilcox and Fourth streets, and is now occupied by the First National Bank. Mr. Cantril moved to Custer county and for a number of years lived at Westcliffe, where he continued to reside until the death of his wife, about two years ago. Since then he has been with his son, John Cantril, and his daughter, Mrs. Elliott, at Glen Grove. The funeral services were held Monday morning at the Castle Rock M. E. Church. Many of the most prominent citizens of the county, who had known the deceased in the early days, were in attendance. Mr. Cantril was born in Logan county, O., in 1821. He moved to Iowa in 1855, and to Colorado in 1862. He lived on what is known as the Allison ranch from then until 1881, during which time he was engaged in the sawmill business. He served as county commissioner from 1875 to 1878, and was elected to the same office while residing in Custer county. Four children survive him; the two mentioned above, Nelson, living at Elyria, near Denver and Addison, Living at Howard, Colo.
