His father and aunts and uncles grew up on the west side of Buffalo Creek, while John Young and Jane (Alexander) Young raised their children over on the east side of Buffalo Creek. In 1850 William was working as a laborer on the farm of Samuel Craig in Franklin Township, Armstrong County, PA. Samuel and his wife Mary were both 69 years old at the time. Their daughters--Margaret, 31, and Mary, 28--were also living there. In 1860 he and his wife and their four children lived on a farm in Oxford Township in Henry County, IL. They had moved to IL about 1857, and their younger two children were born there. By 1870 they had moved further west, to Crystal Township in Tama County, IA. Their youngest child, W Craig, was born in Illinois, so they hadn't been there long. By 1885 they had moved to Clay Township in Grundy County, IA.
