In 1870 the family lived in Crystal Township, Tama County, IA. Living in the house in addition to his parents and all six brothers and sisters were his uncle Elijah Minteer and paternal grandmother Nancy Reed. His father William was a farmer with real property valued at $1200 and personal property valued at $500. In 1885 he and his wife and their daughter Ethel lived on a farm in Clay Township, Grundy County, IA. In 1900 he and Jennie and their four children lived on a farm they owned, with a mortgage, in Van Meter Township, Dallas County, IA. Also living with them was Jennie's sister Mary's three-year-old daughter, Grace, who they had taken in after her parents had died. By 1910 he, Jennie, Claude, and Myrtle had moved to Neligh, NE, where he and Jennie would live for the rest of their lives. In 1910 he was the landlord of a feed barn and owned their home mortgage free. In 1920 he owned their home, with a mortgage. He was a bookkeeper for an insurance company. Claude was their only child still living at home, and Jennie's mother, Amanda Simkins, lived with them, too. In 1930 it was just he and Jennie, living on Fletcher Street, which may have been the name of the alley just west of Main Street. There were also Coe, Mulberry, Locust, Chestnut, and Oak Streets shown near them in the 1930 census records, but no streets with any of those names exist in Neligh any longer. James owned their home, which was valued at $1700. They had a radio, and he was a secretary for Mutual Insurance Co. In 1940 he lived at 344 Fletcher Street with his 58-year-old housekeeper, Rose Ella Van Patter, who was born in Wisconsin. He owned the home, which was valued at $2000. He was still working as an Insurance Agent, having worked 52 weeks in 1939, with an income of $900. In addition to the children linked, James and Jennie had another son, who was the twin of Claude: Clyde Oscar Minteer (1888-1965)
