Crisfield, Md., Aug. 4—William Martin was drowned and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Mears, of New York, had a narrow escape from drowning while in bathing with a party at Old Island, a summer resort near here. In the company were Mr. Martin and Miss May Sterling. The bathers did not know they were on a shelving beach. Mr. Martin suddenly found himself over his head, and called for help. Mr. Mears went to his assistance, followed by Mrs. Mears, but Martin went down and was drowned. Mr. and Mrs. Mears were rescued. Miss Sterling fainted in the water, but was also brought safely to the shore with some difficulty. She was a daughter of William & Margaret Hundley of Prospect Neck and sister of Cordelia Hundley who married William H. B. Custis of Harborton, VA and also a sister of Bessie Hundley, who married E. Reeve Gandy of Crisfield, MD. Mary Hundley Marton, widow of William Marton dec'd, married John H. Williams. Mary and her first husband had a son who was drowned in Pungoteague Creek as a youth.
