Rhodenizer, a native of Farmington, and member of the RCMP at Yorkton, Saskatchewan, was killed almost instantly and Nelson Sammy, Moose Mountain Reserve Indian, was seriously wounded in an exchange of shots when police and an Indian posse closed in upon Sammy in the thick bush country of the reserve, eight miles north of Carlyle, Saskatchewan. Sammy, wanted for questioning in connection with the slaying of his wife and her parents, was tracked to his hiding place by "Tel", the police bloodhound brought for the hunt by Constable Rhodenizer from the Yorkton detachment. The dog which led the police to the Indian's hiding place, dashed back to the side of his fallen master after the exchange of shots and refused to leave him, taking no more interest in the hunt. Sammy is now in hospital, seriously wounded but expected to recover. Carlyle is about 120 miles southeast of Regina. Constable Rhodenizer had been four years in Saskatchewan, during which time he took a course in police dog handling at the RCMP kennels in Regina. He was stationed at Canona, Saskatchewan for a year and had been in Yorkton only a month. He was 28 years old and is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Rhodenizer, Farmington, also two brothers, Warren and Earl, and four sisters, Hilda, Helen, Lola, and Carrie. The funeral service was held in Farmington Hall on Saturday afternoon and was marked with the utmost sympathy. About twenty officers of the RCMP force from provincial points attended. Testifying to the warm regard in which the late Willis Rhodenizer was held, high banks of flowers gave strong evidence of the widespread regret at his untimely passing. This regard was further shown by the massing of hundreds of mourners who jammed the small building to its doors and overflowed into the yard. Rev. B.G. Smith of the Baptist Church conducted the service. Interment was in Parkdale. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse.
