Read More	NELSON, WILMA—Wilma Flory Nelson was born Aug. 19, 1905, on a farm near Shickley, to Charles and Mary Ethel (Wagers) Flory. She died on May 28, 1996, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 9 days. Wilma attended District 69 rural school and graduated from Shickley High School in 1923. After completing a year of study at Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky., she returned home to teach a year at District 69. This was followed by two years of study at Nebraska Wesleyan, where she majored in music and was affiliated with Delta Phi Sorority. She then taught music and English at the high school in Alma. Wilma was married to Oscar E. Nelson on Oct. 5, 1929, in the Flory farm home. They began married life with a memorable charivari on the Danielson farm east of Geneva. Their first child died shortly after birth on Sept. 12, 1931. In 1934, the couple moved to the Arthur Flory Bethel View farm on the Thayer county Line. Their son, John Edward, was born the following year. In 1936, they moved to the Nelson farm five miles east of Geneva on highway 41. They shared the farmhouse with Oscar’s parents until completion of Ed and Tekla’s new home in Geneva. Their daughter, Christie Lou, was born on Feb. 6, 1938. Life was not easy during the late 1930’s when the couple farmed dry land and milked as many as 20 cows. More than once, Wilma returned items to the shelf at the grocery store when there was not enough money to pay for everything. Wilma and Oscar became members of the Chelsea young couples group, where life-long friendships were formed. The couples hosted social events in their homes or at Chelsea Church. With the advent of deep-well irrigation and rural electrification, the couple remodeled their farm home in 1948. Wilma devoted those early years to the nurture of her children, guiding and encouraging them in music, church programs, 4-H work, and numerous school activities. Wilma served as president of the Geneva High School PTA. She had a lovely soprano voice and was an accomplished pianist. As a young homemaker, she began giving piano lessons to children in the Chelsea community. Over the next 40 years, she taught piano to countless students, many of whom remember her patience and kindness, as they learned to read and play music. Wilma was baptized in the Shickley Methodist Church. She later transferred her membership to the Chelsea United Brethren Church, where she became church pianist, taught Sunday school, and served in many other capacities. When Chelsea closed in 1952, she continued as pianist and organist in the Geneva Evangelical United Brethren Church, until that denomination merged with the Methodist Church in 1968. She then served as organist at the Geneva United Methodist Church for many years. Wilma belonged to Sarah Circle, participated in weekly Bible study, and was an active, supportive member until her health declined. She had a deep and abiding faith in God, which was a source of her inner strength and warm Christian personality. Wilma maintained a daily interest in agriculture and community affairs. She joined the Chelsea Woman’s Club in 1941, and attended regularly for 55 years, serving most recently as citizen and health chairman. She and her husband were charter members of the Geneva Community Grange at its formation in 1952. Together they received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good neighbor Award and recognition for soil conservation practices. In 1984, Wilma was honored for her many years of dedicated service to the Grange and to the community. Wilma was also devoted many years of service to the American Red Cross, particularly the blood donor program. She served as county blood chairman from '1961 until 1988. In the past few years, Wilma began to decline physically, but retained her dignity, mental acuity, and keen sense of humor. She loved her children and four grandchildren dearly, followed their activities with familial pride, and expressed her love and appreciation often. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her graciousness, her inherent goodness and her humility. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; infant daughter, Beverly Sue; her parents; and her brother, Donald Flory. She is survived by her son, John Edward and his wife Judy; daughter, Christie L. Andersen ; granddaughters, Sarah E. Andersen, and Martha H. Nelson; grandsons, Andrew E. and J. Braden Nelson; sisters-in-law, Verna Nelson Edington and Edna Flory; Dean T. Anderson; and by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Saturday, June 1, with the Rev. Frank Bobbitt officiating. Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Delwin Myers who sang “Great is Thy Faithfulness” and “O God Our Help in Ages Past.” Pianist Bill Turek played a medley of favorite hymns. Pallbearers were Andrew Nelson, Homer Brauning, Roger Anderson, Harold Engle, Lambert Hopken, and Keith Nunns. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
