Wilma Irene Tisher was born September 15, 1918, the youngest child of Paul and Lena (Johnson) Krause, at Creston, Nebraska. She had 3 sisters and 1 brother. When Wilma was 5 months old the family left Nebraska and moved to the Hecla, SD area where they moved often to various rented farms. Wilma walked only one quarter of a mile to attend a one-room school with all eight grades. Sometimes her sister carried her because she was so small! She graduated from eighth grade and attended High School at Hecla. Hecla was eight miles from her home so she worked various jobs to pay for rent and spending money while attending high school. Some of her favorite subjects at school were history, math and English. She also took Latin as her required foreign language. She played basketball, which at that time was only allowed to play half court. She loved to waltz at house parties and barn dances. Wilma graduated in 1936. Wilma met Lyle Tisher in High School. They were married October 1, 1938 in her parents' living room. Lyle is one month younger than Wilma so he often teased her that she "robbed the cradle." After their marriage she continued to work at various jobs. In 1970 they moved to their home in Hecla, SD where they remained until they moved into the Good Samaritan Society in Oakes, ND in the winter of 2010. Through the years she loved to play cards, did some square dancing, and attended many barn dances and house parties. She also played for many of these dances on her button accordion. She received her first accordion as a child for ten dollars. She wore out three button accordions! She was known to say she was "worn out too!" In addition to raising a large family, plus a large garden and canning, she also took in ironing. She embroidered dishtowels, dresser scarves, did cross-stitch, and sewed many quilts by hand. Almost all of her children and grand children have received a quilt from her. She gave them to the church also. She loved to read. Her favorite book was "No Time on My Hands," which was written about a pioneer lady who won many awards for her quilting masterpieces. Since Wilma's granddaughter lives in Nebraska, where the biography is located, Wilma corresponded with the author. Wilma also loved country music. She and Lyle had taken three trips to the Grand Old Opry, and five trips to Branson, MO. They've traveled to every state except Florida, Hawaii, and Alaska! They especially enjoyed seeing the national monuments in Washington DC, Arlington Cemetery, and Ellis Island. Wilma's favorite color was blue; she loved sour-cream-raisin and fresh peach pie. Her favorite hymns are, "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." Lyle and Wilma's sister Florence Karlen also lived at the Good Samaritan Center while she was a resident there. She made many friends with the staff and residents at the home but one very best friend, Ruth Shearer. Wilma is survived by her husband of 74 years, Lyle Tisher of Oakes; her seven children: Delwyn (Shirley) Tisher of Hecla; Kenneth (Mary) Tisher of Hecla; Victor (Jo) Tisher of Rapid City, SD: Linda "Suzy" (Mike) McKay of Aberdeen; Timothy (Ruby) Tisher of Hecla; Pauline "Polly" (Richard Henninger) Becker of Oakes; Shawn (Kevin) Carlson of Oakes; 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Karlen of Oakes. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters: Mabel Felix and Stella Ackerson, a brother Clarence Krause, a daughter in law Beverly Tisher, and a grandson Michael McKay, Jr. The funeral for Wilma I. Tisher will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hecla. Pastor Jay Haaland will officiate and burial will be in the Hecla Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Saturday at the church with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. The Price Funeral Chapel of Britton has been entrusted with her arrangements.
