Wilson Burns was born on March 24, 1911, in Colorado Springs, CO, the son of the late Olivia Parker Burns (Ady) and James Ferguson Burns. He married Margaret Jane Nowels on March 7, 1936, in Colorado Springs, Co. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1988, a daughter, Olivia Jane Ide, in 1989, a brother, James F. Burns, Jr., and a sister, Gladys B. Nicholson. Mr. Burns was a renowned member of the foundry industry during his entire career. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, MA and earned a B.S. Degree in Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1935. He began his career with Bethlehem Steel in Buffalo, NY, moving to national Malleable and Steel Castings Co. in Sharon, PA in 1937. In 1962, he joined Deere and Company in Moline, IL. He was instrumental in the design, construction and startup of the award winning John Deere Foundry in East Moline, IL. He retired from the John Deere Fouundry as General manager in 1976. He was a member of the American Foundryman's Society and was a Director of that organization. Mr. Burns true avocation was in being active in his church and helping those in need in his community. He was active throughout his life in the Episcopal Church and served on various vestry and boards. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield. He was active for 32 years in numberous [sic] Rotary Clubs wherever he lived. As a young man, he became involved in the Community Chest and United Fund, which begame the United Way. He was President of the United Way in Moline, IL. Upon retirement from Deere and Company, he and his wife moved to Homosassa, FL, where he was instrumental in the formation and beginning of the Citrus County, Florida, United Way. Mr. Burns moved to Springfield, MO in 1991 and lived at The Montclair. He is survived by a son, . . . ; a daughter,. . . : and a son-in-law, . . . . He leaves a very special friend, . . . , eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Memorial services were conducted on Tuesay, December 17, 1996, at Christ Episcopal Church, Springfield, MO with the Rev. Ken Chumbley officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs, CO. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the United Way or a United Way Agency of your choice.
