Description	:	Winnie (Stone) McCarthy was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon on Jan. 28, 1923 and died in Priceville, AL on Jan. 11, 2012. She grew up in Hamburg, Scott Bar and Seiad Valley. She grew up in Hamburg, Scott Bar and Seiad Valley. Her mother taught school in one-room schoolhouses in all these areas. The family moved to the former Wolford Ranch near Etna, and she graduated from Etna High School in 1941. She attended Heald Business College in San Francisco. Upon completion of her degree there, she was offered a civilian job with the Army Medical Depot in Los Angeles. Although her heart remained in Siskiyou County, it was in Los Angeles that she met, fell in love with and subsequently married Capt. Joe McCarthy Jr., who hailed from Pueblo, CO. Joe preceded her in death in 2005. She is survived by five children: Colleen (Clint) Crockett, of Priceville, AL, Pat Spandle, of Tehachapi, CA, Kathleen McCarthy, of Costa Mesa, CA, Dorothy (Dick) Grimmett, of Downey, CA, and Joe (Janet) McCarthy III, of Tempe, AZ; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her sisters: Sarah Uribe and Frances McCormick. The McCarthy family lived in Lynwood, CA for 36 years, and was very active in church, school, neighborhood and community affairs. Both Winnie and Joe were involved with the National Mended Hearts after Joe's first heart surgery. Winnie was active in Junior Catholic Daughters with her daughter, Pat. Winnie was a very friendly, outgoing, giving person and will be greatly missed by not only her family, but by the many friends and colleagues she acquired over the years, including many friends of her children who considered themselves part of the McCarthy clan. The world is a better place for having had Winnie McCarthy in it, and a sadder place now that she is gone.
