Description	:	Witel and his family were "Quakers" (Society of Friends). Witel and his four older brothers apparently left the Society when the Civil War began since all five served in the Union Army. In the family there's said to be a large photo with all five of the brothers in their uniforms. Witel appears to have been a loner and explorer of sorts. He started a family in the Louisville, KY area and left them sometime before 1897 to move to Linn County, Oregon and then to California where he lived from 1897... He started a family in the Louisville, KY area and left them sometime before 1897 to move to Linn County, Oregon and then to California where he lived from 1897 until his death. In 1910 he was a gardener at a 'summer resort' in Ukiah, California. In 1920, he lived at a veteran's home in Malibu, and also worked at a seminary in Menlo Park. He died in a place of amazing beauty, after collapsing while hiking behind the VA home in Yountville. He didn't come back to the home one afternoon. The next day they found him on a trail and brought him back to the home where he died. - dialynna
