He was born Nov. 3, 1912, in Chickasaw, Okla., to Archimedes and Verna (Torbett) Hensley. The family moved to Manhattan, Mont., in 1921 and to the Crow Creek Valley in 1929. He attended school in Toston. Spike worked at mines in Radersburg and Fort Peck Dam, prior to enlisting in the Army in 1941. As a Tech Sergeant, he was in the Army Air Corps until 1945, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe during World War II. While on leave in 1942, Spike met the beautiful Helen Agnus Comerford in Cleveland, Ohio. They were married on May 8, 1943. After the war, they moved to the Crow Creek Valley to farm. There, they raised three children. Surviving are his daughters Patricia Pillen and her husband Bud of North Las Vegas, Nev., Mary Anne Perlman of Las Vegas; son Robert T and daughter-in-law Susan of Townsend; grandchildren Carol Hensley Stock of Glasgow, Jennifer Hensley of Helena, Robin Hensley Blazer of Fayetteville, N.C., and Thomas William Hensley of Missoula; brothers Robert L. and his wife Gudrun Hensley of Townsend, Joe Hensley of Townsend, and Tom and his wife Elaine of Crow Creek; sisters Margaret Poe of Townsend and Louise Determan and her husband Jerry of Las Vegas. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Edna Hensley and June Hensley of Townsend. He had numerous nieces and nephews and two great-grandsons. Spike was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant sisters Carolyn and Virginia, and brothers Torbett and George. There will be a memorial service at the Townsend Funeral Chapel, 310 Broadway, Townsend on Monday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be sent to Broadwater Health Center or the American Cancer Society.
