I believe it was named for my Grandmother who was the school teacher there at the time. Her name was Zenia Clark. Later she married W. L. Heney who was with one of the Eureka newspapers. Dear Mrs. Burgess, Received your letter yesterday, and am afraid I do not have too much information for you. It was my mother, "Miss Zenia Clark" who taught there. She graduated from the State Normal school in northern New York, and taught there, before coming to California. Her uncle, Cyrus Stafford - Mayor of Eureka at the time, induced Mother to come west to teach. The salarys here were so much better. I do know that she taught at Howe Creek and at Bucksport, besides Zenia. And I have always been told that Zenia was named for her. I found an old diary that she kept, and I make out that she came west in 1876. And in one place she mentioned she was to get $60 a month. Quite different from what they get now. I would not know who else to contact, as all the older relatives have passed on. My parents were Mr. and Mrs. Wm L. Heney of Eureka. Sincerely Yours, Edna H. Taubman. Mr. George Croyden was the first Postmaster and Miss Clark and his wife Sarah, were very close friends, that is how they came to name it ZENIA* The post office was at the place just above us that Bud Goe now owns."
