He is a descendant of one of the pioneers who came to California when the country was comparatively new, and who infused his energy and thrift into the very life of the community. Charles H. Heney went to California with his family in 1849 during the gold excitement, traveling the customary route by way of the Isthmus of Panama. Arriving in this state, he worked in the mines for a short time with his brother, George K., who was located in Placerville. He afterward returned to San Francisco, and in 1855 located in Humboldt County, returning the following year for his family. They located permanently in Eureka, where Mr. Heney became a useful and progressive citizen. His first employment was in William Carson's sawmill, and he afterwards engaged in general merchandising. He was subsequently appointed postmaster of Eureka, and filled that office in a most capable manner for a period of nine years, being an incumbent of the office at the time of Lincoln's assassination. In 1876 he sold his store and bought the Southport ranch on Table Bluff, and there built a tramway from his landing to Eel River, a distance of three and a half miles. After operating it for two seasons, he sold it to the Pacific Lumber Co. Subsequently he built the Newburgh sawmill, located near Fortuna, in connection with E. J. Dodge and others and there engaged in the lumber business until his death. He was a Republican in politics, using both his influence and his vote to advance the cause of his chosen party. He owned the ranch of 165 acres in Table Bluff township which is nor the residence of his son. His death occurred in Eureka October 24, 1885 at the age of 55 yrs. William L. Heney was reared in Eureka, where he early learned the printer's trade. In company with Austin Wiley, a postmaster of Arcata, he established the Evening Telephone, under the firm name of Wiley & Heney. Later the firm purchased the Humboldt Times, and consolidated the two papers under the name of the Times-Telephone, which they conducted for a number of years. Selling out to the Times Publishing Company, Mr. Heney was connected with the Humboldt Times in various capacities until 1900, when he severed his connection with that paper and turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. In 1901 Mr. Heney removed to his ranch and in addition to carrying on general farming, he has a warehouse at Heney's Landing and buys and sells grain. He owned valuable residence property in Eureka. He served in the Eureka City Council for 6 yrs., and at one time was s candidate for mayor. In social circles he affiliated with Humboldt Lodge No. 79, F. & A. M. and with Humboldt Parlor No. 14, Native Sons of the Golden West. Heney and his son, William W. Heney, who died at Petaluma last week, were held at the Saunders parlors Sunday afternoon. Rev. C. E. Farrar of the Episcopal church officiating. A large procession accompanied the body to Myrtle Grove cemetery where interment was made. Masonic services were held at the grave for the elder Heney by Humboldt Lodge F. and A.
