Read More	Zudok Jarvis Last Thursday when the news of the death of this good old man whose name is placed at the head of this sketch became known, while not unexpected, a feeling of universal sorrow was manifested on every hand. His long continued illness together with old age gave but little hope to his friends for any other result. Everything that medical skill could employ or loving hands provide, was brought into requisition for his relief; but for the past week it was evident that the sands of life were about run out, and at 2 o’clock, June 24th, he fell peacefully asleep, and without an apparent struggle his spirit passed on to the other side of the dark river. Zadok Jarvis was born Dec. 28th, 1809, in Rowan county, N.C. At the age of twelve he came with his father’s family to Union county, Ind., where they remained until 1832, when he moved to Cass county, Mich. At the age of 27 Mr. Jarvis married Miss Jane Gardner, and in 1837 brought his young wife to Iowa, locating on the west side of Virginia Grove, Louisa county, where they began in earnest life’s work, subjected to all the hardships and inconveniences of pioneer life. In 1844 his wife died, having borne him five children, only two of whom are now living, Mrs. Jas. Chapman of this township, and Mrs. J. T. Gawthorp, of Burlington. In 1847 he married Charlotte E. Spafford, daughter of Orlin Spafford one of the early and respected settlers of the county. Four of the six children, the fruits of his second marriage, are living, three boys and one girl. In many respects Mr. Jarvis was a remarkable man. Deprived of the advantages for acquiring even a common school education, he was a man of superior judgement and native talent, and as a business man, developed splendid executive abilities which were recognized, and his wise council sought for by his neighbors. Generous to a fault, the home of this plain and honest man was for years in the early days the abode of genuine hospitality. One of the most striking traits of his character was his sterling integrity. His word was as good as his bond, and although through business entanglement with others he has suffered financial misfortune, his honor and his good name through all the varying scenes of a busy life has ever remained unstained, and he can justly claim the full recognition of all the term implies, “the noblest work of God” an honest man. In politics Mr. Jarvis has all his life been known as a staunch Democrat, firmly clinging to his political convictions, yet he cheerfully accorded to others the right of opinion, a trait precious for its scarcity in this age of partisan bitterness. In 1870 he united with the Methodist church, and since then has lived a faithful and consistent member of that organization. The funeral services were held at the church of his choice, presided over by the Rev. J.W. Lewis, who preached an eloquent and appropriate discourse to the large congregation who had gathered from all parts of the county to pay their last tribute to this old and honored citizen.
