Description	:	This cemetery is located in the middle of a farm field, to the north of Highway 148 in Grenville. It is durrounded by private farm property, about 350 meters to the north of the highway. There is no signage of any kind indicating the cemetery. Access will likely be difficult except on a summer day when the ground is dry. The farm originally belonged to Alexandere Beauchamp. There is no signage of any kind indicating the cemetery. Access will likely be difficult except on a summer day when the ground is dry. The farm originally belonged to Alexandere Beauchamp. A chapel that served the francophone community, built in 1857, was present adjacent to the cemetery, but the chapel burned down in the 1950s. Approximately 50 people are known to have been buried here, although there may be additional unmarked graves. All stones have been photographed as of July 2016. The first burials date from early 1880s. In some church record books, this cemetery is referred to as the 'Lachute French Protestant Cemetery' or 'Grenville French Protestant Cemetery'. The hamlet at this site was known as Marelan, and occasionally this cemetery is referred to as "Marelan Protestant Cemetery". Marelan was an industrial hamlet in the eastern Township of Grenville that has its heyday at the end of the First World War. In 1922, the Scottish Canadian Magnesite Company set up its magnesite processing plant in Kilmar. An 18.5-kilometer stretch of rail connects the Kilmar Mine to the Canadian Pacific Railway, passing through Magnesite Station, which later became Marelan. The Scottish Canadian Magnesite Company and the North American Magnesite Company merged in 1933 to create Canadian Refractories Limited, which still operates a factory approximately half a mile down the road from the cemetery. The cemetery is very well maintained and carefully cared for by Knox Wesley United Church in Grenville, and is still in active use - the most recent burial, as of summer 2016, was in 2005. Many of the stones for people buried 80 or more years ago appear to be quite new.
