Description	:	Broken Hills was founded by two Englishmen, Joseph Arthur and James Stratford. They were the first people to find gold ore within Broken Hills and did so on April 13, 1913. After five years of labor, both Arthur and Stratford recovered ore valued at only $68,000. They sold their claims to George Graham Rice, who promoted the mine and sold shares of property. Rice invested $75,000 of stockholder money into the mine to produce only $7,000 of revenue. The area had little water and fires were a major concern.
