Description	:	The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Chojnów (prior to 1945 Haynau) was founded in the 14th century as a wooden structure. Over the course of the 15th century, the church was rebuilt in brick. In 1525, the building was handed over to a Protestant congregation following the conversion of Duke Frederick II of Liegnitz to that religion. Read More	The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Chojnów (prior to 1945 Haynau) was founded in the 14th century as a wooden structure. Over the course of the 15th century, the church was rebuilt in brick. In 1525, the building was handed over to a Protestant congregation following the conversion of Duke Frederick II of Liegnitz to that religion. The church was heavily damaged by fire in 1651 and rebuilt over the next eight years. During the Napoleonic Wars, the church was used as a hospital. It was restored in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following WWII, the Polish authorities returned the structure to the Catholic Church, who re-consecrated it to the Apostles Peter and Paul (it had formerly been dedicated to the Virgin Mary). Between 1969-70, the church was decorated with controversial frescoes of the Stations of the Cross by Piotr Wróblewski, which included many references to contemporary politics and anti-Communist messages. The church contains many old epitaphs and gravestones from the 16th through 18th centuries, though many were damaged by being concreted over post-WWII and are slowly being restored.
