Description	:	This cemetery once had granite tombstones in it, and over 30 graves. Today nothing remains of this cemetery and the current landowner doesn't know where the cemetery was located, although his deed has a legal description of the cemetery included in it. Poultry houses and barns are located near where the cemetery should be, which is in a cow pasture. Hopefully someone will use the legal description in the Warranty Deed and find where the cemetery is located. Read More	This cemetery once had granite tombstones in it, and over 30 graves. Today nothing remains of this cemetery and the current landowner doesn't know where the cemetery was located, although his deed has a legal description of the cemetery included in it. Warranty Deed dated December 2003 has the folowing exemption for the cemetery (and cemetery exemption is included in every deed of conveyance prior to this one): Part of the SE 1/4 of Section 15, Township 17 North, Range 28 West, Washington County, Arkansas ....(long legal description included here in Deed)....EXCEPT the graveyard, being a part of the Southeast Quarter of the Southeast Quarter (SE 1/4 SE 1/4) of said Section 15, described as beginning at a point 33 1/2 rods North and 12 rods West of the Southeast corner of said Section 15; thence North 9 rods, thence West 13 rods, thence south 9 rods, thence East 13 rods to the point of beginning. (Deed recorded in Washington County; file #2003-00064160; document ID 006801220002; recorded on 12/22/2003) The information that is given here was recorded by Ruby HOLT Vaughan in November 1969 and twenty years later in 1989. This is what she said about the location of the cemetery: "The little, deserted, unfenced graveyard I found was in a pasture on top of the hill, northeast of the present Mayfield store, near the east edge of Washington County. The land is privately owned. Many of the tombstones are knocked down and broken by livestock, and it was whispered a bulldozer had been driven across the graves. Some were overgrown with hedge-apple shrubs. I looked and looked and copied as many grave markers as I could find. I was searching for the tombstone of James Clark, and I looked and searched but could not find it. Mary Jane Clark, the great-granddaughter of James, had told me what it looked like...I eventually gave up the search and started to go home. Darkness was dimming the light. I stumbled over a sandstone - just a square corner showing through the dirt. My excitement grew. I had neither stick or shovel so I dug the rock up with my bare hands. I had found the "J. C." rock, covered with dirt. Darkness caught me, but the next day I took my camera and some chalk back to the little plot of ground, propped up the rock and chalked the letters "J. C." and have a picture to prove it was there." Ruby visited the cemetery again in November 1989 and wrote: "Although a very modern chicken industry has been built close by now, the little graveyard still remains nearby. I shall check later on this and compare what changes the past twenty years has made." According to the tombstone information Ruby recorded, the last burial made in this cemetery was in 1896. Ruby HOLT Vaughan passed away in November 1995. Another source says that this Clark Cemetery is located: "Atop a high hill back of the old Mayfield School house" As of 2014, the tombstones appear to have either been removed from the area or the tombstones have been covered up with dirt when the area was bulldozed by a previous landowner. The cemetery area appears to have been leveled and is now a hay field with no sign of any graves.
