Description | : | The University of Leiden, founded in 1575, attracted students from all over Europe. In order to accomodate the English and Scottish students, the States of Holland and the magistrates of Leiden jointly endowed a Scottish church in 1609 with Robert Durie of Aberdeen as the first minister. The first building set aside for the church was St. Catherine Gastius (1609-1622). The second location was the Jerusalem church (1622-44), a short distance south of the university.
