Description	:	The University of Leiden, founded in 1575, attracted students from all over Europe. In order to accomodate the English and Scottish students, the States of Holland and the magistrates of Leiden jointly endowed a Scottish church in 1609 with Robert Durie of Aberdeen as the first minister. The first building set aside for the church was St. Catherine Gastius (1609-1622). The second location was the Jerusalem church (1622-44), a short distance south of the university. Read More	The University of Leiden, founded in 1575, attracted students from all over Europe. In order to accomodate the English and Scottish students, the States of Holland and the magistrates of Leiden jointly endowed a Scottish church in 1609 with Robert Durie of Aberdeen as the first minister. The first building set aside for the church was St. Catherine Gastius (1609-1622). The second location was the Jerusalem church (1622-44), a short distance south of the university. The third location, which became the site of the burials, was at the former chapel of Dominican nuns located near the university on the east side of the Rapenburg near the Nun's Bridge (Nonnenbrug). It is sometimes called the Faliede Bagijnen (Mantled Beguines) church because of the black scarf worn by the nuns. This building came into the possession of the university in 1595, at which time it was remodeled as a two-story structure, the upper story being used as the university library and the lower divided into two rooms, the front half for a fencing schoool and the rear half for a combined lecture hall and museum of anatomy. In 1644, the fencing school was set aside and remodeled to house the Scottish church, which remained until 1805. In 1863, when the entire structure was being remodeled for use as a library, six memorial stones were discovered "two feet under the wooden floor of the room on the basement story. . . . The stones had probably formed a part of the original pavement of the chapel. . . . In position under the stones, and near to them, were found parts of twelve bodies.
