| Description | : | In 1827, it was decided that burials inside churches were no longer allowed in the Netherlands, starting in 1829. This would mean Catholics would have to be buried in general cemeteries. In order to prevent this, some Catholics in Leiden requested a piece of land on which they could build a Roman Catholic cemetery. This request was accepted. On 19 November 1828, the cemetery was officially opened and the first people were buried. On 1 August 1969, it was decided that Begraafplaats Zijlpoort would be closed.
