Description	:	------------------------------- This Feather "family" Cemetery is located on the Northern edge of Section 7, in Oronoko Township, Berrien County Michigan. It is on the North side of E. Hinchman Road, between Hollywood Road and Scottdale Road (about one mile West of the Hinchman United Methodist Church and the old Hinchman grade school). Read More	------------------------------- This Feather "family" Cemetery is located on the Northern edge of Section 7, in Oronoko Township, Berrien County Michigan. It is on the North side of E. It is also North-West of Berrien Springs, Michigan. ---------------------------------- This cemetery was origionally part of the farm of Joshua Feather Sr. and his wife Mary Ann (Smith) Feather, who came from Pennsylvania to Berrien Springs, Berrien County Michigan with three sons, in a one-horse wagon in 1836. Joshua Feather Sr. and his family then settled in Section seven of Oronoko Township, on the West side of Hinchman, Berrien County Michigan in 1837, on what would become known as part of the "Feather Settlement". The "Feather Settlement" later extended outwards, as they purchased more land, and as the family grew. Cherry trees were once located on three sides of this cemetery, but the fruit trees have since been removed. ----------------------------------- Joshua Feather Sr. and his wife Mary Ann (Smith) Feather are buried here, along with four of their five children, as well as Joshua's brother Moses Feather. ----------------------------------- There were over 60 burials in this cemetery. Three graves were later moved to the Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph, Michigan including: Anna C. (Warsco) Feather (the wife of Jacob Calvin Feather), and their two infant children, Carrie Ann Feather, and Joseph Feather. The burial here of George Dwight Mather who died in the Civil War, is in question. This leaves approximately 56 or 57 persons (with readable headstones), buried here in the Feather Cemetery (including "Three Infants Feather", listed on one memorial). --- Note: On "one" recording of this cemetery are also listed the following infants: Perhaps these names were taken from the sexton or death records, as there are no headstones for them (that can still be read). They are NOT listed on the "Feather Cemetery Plat Map". 1. Two Infants Camfield, children of William Camfield and Rosa P. Harner. 2. Infant boy Eybert/Egbert, son of John Eybert/Egbert. 3. Infant boy Feather, age 11 months, son of Joshua Feather Jr. and Mary Shafer. 4. Infant Mhagus/Mhagnus, child of G. Mhagus. 5. Infant Sattler, child of G. W. Sattler. 6. Infant Shunkwiler, child of William Shunkwiler and Lydia E. Feather. 7. Infant Weber, stillborn on Nov. 8, 1919, child of Henry Weber. ---------------------------------- The first "known" burial in this cemetery was that of Aurelia A. Feather in 1853, the infant daughter of John Henry Feather Sr. and his first wife Lucinda ("Lucy") Ann Bechtel. The last "known" burial in this cemetery was that of Mary Ann (Feather) Harner in 1930, the youngest child of Joshua Feather Sr. and his wife Mary Ann (Smith) Feather. ----------------------------------- There were at least three recordings of this cemetery (which vary slightly). This cemetery is not fenced, and there is no driveway for this cemetery. Parking is along-side the road. This cemetery is now township owned. ---------------------------------- Note: This cemetery is sometimes referred to, as the "Feather-Harner" cemetery, because the two families were intermarried a number of times. ---------------------------------- Note: George Dwight Mather who died in the Civil War, is listed in the recordings of this cemetery as being buried here (with no headstone), next to his wife Cornelia, and daughter Ada Jane Mather, but he possibly is not. There is a Civil War Marker for him in the Canton Street Cemetery in Canton, Hartford County Connecticut, next to his parents, his sister, and his brother-in-law (who also died in the Civil War). ------------------------------------------------
