Description	:	Fort Esperanza was a Confederate earthworks post started in 1862 on the eastern shore of Matagorda Island in Calhoun County, Texas. The post was attacked and captured by Union forces 29 Nov 1863. Union forces held the post until they evacuated it on 15 Jun 1864. It was reoccupied by Confederate forces in June 1864 and remained under Confederate control until abandoned in 1865 at the end of the war.
