Read More	Golden Hill Cemetery is a historic African-American cemetery located on Seven Mile Ferry Rd in Clarksville, Montgomery County, TN. It was established in 1863 and sits on 7.56 acres of land located 1/4 of a mile South of Greenwood Cemetery (originally established as the city’s white cemetery). Golden Hill is located immediately East of Evergreen Cemetery, which is a second cemetery for African Americans established in 1929. The entrances to Golden Hill and Evergreen are defined by two sets of red brick gates on each side of the dirt drives that enter each of the cemeteries. The exact dates of the gates is unknown, but the gates were constructed prior to World War II, circa 1940. There is not much left to distinguish the two cemeteries from each other, although an application for National Register of Historic Places mentions that the Western border of Golden Hill is “clearly marked by a line of large, mature trees that separate the two cemeteries”. It also states that the Eastern border is marked by a “metal and wooden fence”. It was established on land originally purchased in 1863, by Stephen Cole, a former slave who purchased his freedom in 1859, and is believed to be the oldest tract of land continuously owned by African Americans in Clarksville. Golden Hill is also considered to be the first corporate business owned by African Americans in Clarksville. Other owners include: John W. Page in the 1880s (“It was during Page’s ownership that the cemetery became a corporation.”-National Register of Historic Places); Mattie Page; William Keesee in 1929; Jennie Keesee in 1933; Albert Roberts (for $1) in 1947; Reverend Wiley Blount Moore in 1996; Larry W. Chappell in 2007. Many of the burials at Golden Hill Cemetery occurred during the cemetery’s period of significance, between 1863 and 1951, with the period of greatest concentration being from 1890 to 1930. A rough estimate, based on extant markers, indicate that 80-90 percent of the burials took place before 1951, which is not surprising since the adjacent Evergreen Cemetery has established in 1929 and most of its burials date after 1951. Most of this information was obtained from the application for National Register of Historic Places. It is suggested that you search for your interment in Evergreen as well as Golden Hill, as they are often confused as the same cemetery.
