The people buried here are Philip Calvert, Chancellor of the Colony and youngest son of the first Lord Baltimore. His first wife, Anne Wolsey Calvert and a child. The brick chapel was built by Jesuits in 1667 at the other end of the town from the government Assembly building. It was Maryland's first large brick building and replaced an earlier wooden chapel. It was laid out in the form of a cross and measured 54 feet long by 57 feet wide. There were many burials made under the chapel floor. In 1704, after the Church of England was made Maryland's legally established official religion, the local sheriff and his deputies, under orders from the English-appointed Maryland governor John Seymour after the State Assembly passed an "Act Against Popery," locked the arched wooden doors of the Catholic brick chapel at St. Mary's City. He also was to keep the key and the chapel was never to be opened again. The bricks in the church were reused on the Jesuit plantation in St. Inigoes, a few miles south. Centuries later, historic St. Mary's City staff succeeded in relocating the brick chapel. As part of the 350th anniversary of Maryland's founding in 1984, the area of the foundations of the 1667 chapel was added the interpretive sites for visitors. Excavations began in 1988, the purpose of which was to get information about the original chapel so it could be accurately recreated. According to Tim Riordan, chief archaeologist at Historic St. Mary's City (in the June 2009 issue of "The River Gazette") "The materials and techniques were of the type used on the original, the most obvious being the scaffolding," he says. "Instead of using metal scaffolding, carpenters used logs, planks and rope to support the masons. Because this needed to be supported by the rising structure itself, ‘putlog' holes occur in the walls, just as in older brick buildings." The bricks that are visible will be wood fired from local clay just as the originals were. The mortar being used has been made from oyster shells just as in the original. Bricks are being hand carved to form windowsills, pilasters, a piscina. The underground construction isn't as authentic, as heat and electric lines are being embedded under the stone floors. Eventually the lead coffins found at the site will be display at their original location and a portion of the original five-foot deep foundation of the chapel will be displayed in another place. In the 2009 Sept. 20 ceremony, current St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron unlocked the massive oak and pine doors of the reconstructed chapel, using a key believed to be a replica of the one his predecessor used 305 years earlier.
