The land for this Cemetery was donated to the Catholic Church in 1815 by George Garig. Some of Baton Rouge's earliest settlers are buried in Highland Cemetery. Through neglect, Highland Cemetery had become overgrown and fell into disrepair for many years. Through the efforts of the Louisiana Historical Society, a restoration project was begun in 1968.
