The Wood private burial ground is some distance up in the pasture, back of the house, that is, what is left of it. This cemetery has succumbed to the decay of time and man and nothing is left but the base of a large granite monument with the name Wood carved on it. Through the courtesy of the late Mrs. William Irminger, who subsequently became owner of the Wood's farm, I obtained information of the Wood's burial ground. The cemetery is about one hundred feet to the right of the house as it faces the main highway. But, there is nothing now to indicate this sacred spot of pioneer dust. The little fence that once surrounded it has been removed, also all the white Italian marble headstones, that once marked the different graves, that laid out under the protecting arms of a tree. The ground has been plowed over, and when I saw it some years ago, all that remained was the stump of this tree. A sad picture, but the march of time and progress seems to level all things, and those who laid the foundation of our great country, have passed into the forgotten realm. In my search over the place, I found quite a few of the headstones, though some were broken and not easy to decipher. Here is the list of those I found, though there were others, I was told, but could not find them. The above information was given by Miss Virginia Stewart, Kansas City, July 1944. Miss Stewart is a descendant of William Sarah Wood. Many graveyards on farms in Clay County, MO., are found in this condition. -E. McKinley The cemetery was located southwest from Liberty. A man named William Wood bought this Lewis farm. Some books call it the Wood's Cemetery.
