There are quite a few issues to explain with regard to this cemetery. First, the correct spelling is "Mount Hanley" and the correct name of the cemetery, as evidenced by a photo of a sign that once hung on the surrounding green wire fence, is "Mount Hanley Historic Cemetery". The confusion does not end there. This cemetery is located on an unmaintained road which is today officially designated as "Lily Lake Road" and if the road appears on a map at all, that is the name that will show. Going back to the early 1800s and well into this century, this road was formerly called "Barteaux Road". Some locals and historians still insist on calling it so. The road once spanned a forested area between Mount Hanley Road in Mount Hanley and the corner of Douglas Road and Lily Lake Road (maintained) in Port George. The entire middle section of the span is now overgrown and impassable, so the cemetery can only be accessed off Mount Hanley Road. When Dr. Marble did his survey in 1971, he found that there were burials on both sides of Lily Lake Road. Because the two burial areas were quite close to each other, he believed that they were two parts of the same cemetery. A local resident agreed that it was one cemetery and told Dr. Marble that he believed it was an old Anglican cemetery. As a result, Dr. Marble's survey for the cemetery includes burials from both sides of Lily Lake Road. The problem is that these are two separate cemeteries, not one, and neither of them is Anglican. The cemetery located on the north side of Lily Lake Road, about 130 meters from Mount Hanley Road, was originally an old Baptist cemetery which fell into disuse after a time and became very overgrown with trees and deadfall and brush. In the 1980s a group of dedicated locals set about clearing the overgrowth away and erecting a green link fence around it. They renamed the restored cemetery "Mount Hanley Historic Cemetery" and placed a wooden sign on the fence displaying that name. The other cemetery, located on the south side of Lily Lake Road about 140 meters from Mount Hanley Road, is known as "Mount Hanley Methodist Cemetery". The original Mount Hanley Methodist meeting house was located on the same side of the road between Mount Hanley Road and the Methodist Cemetery. So, if you should ever consult Dr. Marble's original notes or explore the online transcriptions of his notes for the "Historic Cemetery" in Mount Hanley, be aware that the memorials listed are a MIX of memorials from both the Baptist and the Methodist cemeteries on opposite sides of Lily Lake Road. On Find a Grave the memorials have been correctly separated into their respective cemeteries: "Mount Hanley Historic Cemetery" and "Mount Hanley Methodist Cemetery". DIRECTIONS: The entrance to Lily Lake Road is just south of Civic #1919 on the opposite side of Mount Hanley Road. The "Mount Hanley Historic Cemetery" is located on the north side of the abandoned Lily Lake Road (formerly called Barteaux Road), about 130 meters east of Mount Hanley Road. The sign has long ago rotted away but the green link fence is still an identifying feature.
