Nordhauser Dom was never aCathedral of the seat of a Bishop, but until secularization a collegiate church. He received the title to the Holy Cross of the there held cross relic, a fragment of the cross of Jesus Christ. Since the Reformation, the Cathedral is the only Catholic Church in the town of Nordhausen. A woman convent was founded in 961 by Queen Mathilde. Of the then established Church no remains are known so far. Apparently, the construction was however changed in the first half of the 12th century, probably also expanded. The foundations of the East towers and the crypt are preserved. In 1220, the convent was converted into an Augustinian monastery. The Church in turn was rebuilt around 1250. A depletion of the Cathedral monastery began with the thirty years war, so that the Nordhausen cross reliquary was sold in 1675 after Duderstadt. Only to the thousandth anniversary of the city of Nordhausen 1927 the Cathedral got a relic of the cross again. In 1810 the monastery was abolished in the course of secularization and the related Church of a parish church. When the British air attack on Nordhausen on April 4, 1945, also the dome fire destruction of the steep roof of the Hall and the destruction of the window suffered considerable structural damage. After the war, he received a temporary roof. The steep roof in the old form was restored in 1965. The Interior of the Church was renovated in the 1970s. The repair of the building itself was in the 2000s and was completed in 2008.
