Description	:	The first known survey of this cemetery was done by Dr. Allan E. Marble on June 17, 1972. He referred to the cemetery as the "Potter Cemetery" and assigned it an identifying number, in this case 113, and location, Upper Clements. His notation reads: "There were more stones here, but they were pushed over the bank onto the seashore." In his Potter family sketch, Wayne Walker, a highly respected Annapolis County researcher, cites a letter dated Feb 1996 by Velma (Potter) Ferguson, RR#2 Annapolis Royal to Fred Potter. "The cemetery is quite nearby on property now owned by Kathy Sidney. Last summer Joseph Potter, his wife and a friend cleared out a roadway from the beach to the site. Mary's stone is still there and a small one with Mary, also near it. I know there were other family members buried there also. Found evidence of flat stones, parts of what we believe to be tombstones. My dad (Homer Potter) told me that when he was a boy there were other tombstones, a fence around the cemetery and a walkway with steps to the beach below. There used to be shrubs and flowers planted around the area. A grapevine also amongst the trees. Mary's stone reveals Masonic markings which are of interest. David Potter, when he was here said Mary F. Potter's husband Joseph was an Arch Mason. Not surprising since Major Erasmus Phillips who received a Military Grant of land in Clements in 1759 was the man responsible for establishing the Masonic Lodge in Annapolis Royal and Canada. Mary's stone states it was the first in the cemetery and was made in Boston if memory serves me well. Dates 1752-1790." Around the same time, Denise J. Rice, a well-known Annapolis County cemetery researcher, visited this cemetery, giving it the name "Potter Burial Ground" and took some photos. However, none of the photos contain an inscription that is legible. Early in May 2022, Brian McConnell contacted Denise for directions to this cemetery and, although those directions were rather vague, Brian managed to successfully locate the cemetery at the end of a long, unmarked driveway across from Civic #2660 Highway #1. He took a few photos but none were legible enough to read the inscription on Mary Potter's headstone. Knowing of Steve Skafte's interest in locating this cemetery, he forwarded the photos and directions to Steve. On May 15, 2022, Steve Skafte, a professional photographer and avid hunter of abandoned cemeteries, using directions provided by Brian McConnell, visited the "Potter Burial Ground". He not only captured excellent photos of Mary Potter's headstone, including a very legible inscription, but he also obtained GPS coordinates for the cemetery. Aware of Dr. Marble's notation about some gravestones being pushed over the bank onto the shoreline below, Steve conducted a thorough search of the shore for any signs of headstones or headstone fragments. "I checked all along the beach, but didn't see any sign of anything left there. I figure if there was, it's been long, long since destroyed by the waves and tide. Both of which are quite extreme here with the influence of Fundy."
