The dirt road leads around to the larger/main part of Pilgrim Rest Cemetery. Standing on the dirt road (see photo) facing south, towards the trees in the background of the photo; Rogan is on the right/west side and Pilgrims Rest is on the left/east side of the dirt road. Pilgrims Rest cemetery is maintained by Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church on 4216 NE 63 not far from the cemetery and is the older section of Pilgrim Rest Cemetery. Rogan Cemetery is a small African American Cemetery located 1/2 mile east of NE Coltrane Road on NE 63rd Street on the South side of the street. Rogan Cemetery was established in 1934. A farmer by the name of Eli Rogan gave a small portion of land for a cemetery to the African American families. For many years he cared for the cemetery and dug/filled the graves himself. He is buried in the cemetery along with his wife. Pilgrim Rest Cemetery is on the east (left) side of the dirt road and ends at NE 63 and College street. Rogan Cemetery is not a perpetual care cemetery or endowment care cemetery as a result funds for maintenance, repair and care of the cemetery are not available. It appears the families primarily assume responsibility for the upkeep for their loved ones' cemetery plots. However, over time, as the family line dies off or move away; the cemetery plots begin to look overgrown, poorly maintained and forgotten. - Cemetery description and information submitted by Jackie.
