Description : On this spot in 1838, Fr. Frederic Baraga built his second Catholic church at Lapointe. His first church was built three years earlier, at the site of the old LaPointe Indian Cemetery. Considered the oldest Catholic community in the state of Wisconsin, the history goes back to 1669, when Catholic missionaries Fr. Claude Allouez and Fr. Jaques Marquette visited the area to start a Catholic mission. The first church on this site was built of logs and was destroyed by a fire in 1901. The present church was built in 1902.
