In about ½ mile on your left, you will see a black on white sign at the side of a driveway up against a tall hedge. Behind this is an old white house with a circle drive in front. This house is #2948 US 30 East and is a private dwelling not open to the public, but it is the old First Soudersburg Methodist Church, built by Jacob Beam in 1801, with Rev. Henry Boehm being the first minister. If you turn into the driveway in front of the sign and drive along the old church property, you may view the cemetery that has never been destroyed, as was the case in Strasburg. You can turn around at the end of the driveway or in the field if it isn’t soggy. Historical Society of the EPA Conference Soudersburg’s 1902 Centennial Celebration Editor’s note: The following is an account of the 100th Anniversary services of the Soudersburg Church – apparently marking the centennial of the building, not the society – held October 26, 1902, at which the above paper was read. The account appeared in the Philadelphia Methodist, the conference newspaper, of November 15, 1902, and was written by Rev. L. D. McClintock. The centennial of this Soudersburg Methodist Episcopal Church was celebrated on October 26th. The building has undergone a complete renovation – new flooring, wainscoating, papering, stained glass windows, and new carpeting so beautiful is as to give it the appearance of a new building, and with its solid walls and slate roof it promises to endure as a landmark of Methodism in Lancaster County another hundred years. A very pretty silver communion set was the gift of Mrs. Blanche May, of Philadelphia. This is evidence of her cherished remembrance of the old church of her childhood days. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Gerberich, who transcribed thousands of tombstone through the region, wrote the following: Soudersburg Church is the second oldest Methodist church in Lancaster County. Services were held in the church up until the time of the war.. My father supplied the charge and preached almost the last sermon and my grandfather preached there many times. In 1804 it was honored by the convening in that place of the Philadelphia conference. The congregation sold the church to the Pentecostal people about a decade ago. It is now deserted and in a lamentable state of dilapidation. A.N. Breneman of Lancaster has been attempting to buy the property of late. The graveyard is in eve worse condition, being all overgrown with weeds and bramble. The southern part is said to have been the oldest and here there are many markers, weather-worn and illegible. It is stated that colored people were permitte to inter their dead amongst the old graves, and there are certainly some of them buried in that section.
