Read More	Barnston is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is located 2 miles southeast from Great Dunmow and is 9 miles north-northwest from the county town of Chelmsford. The village is in the district of Uttlesford and in the parliamentary constituency of Saffron Walden. The village has its own Parish Council. Barnston's history dates back thousands of years. Flint implements were found at the beginning of the 20th century and it is probable that these implements are from the Neolithic or New Stone Age.An Iron Age pottery vessel dating from the first few years of the first century was found high on the valley slope above the river Chelmer near to where St Andrew's Church and Barnston Hall now stand. It is thought that this is the most likely site of the earliest settlement in Barnston. There is no evidence of Roman occupation in or around Barnston, however there are several Roman roads around the area. Barnston is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The local churches are St Andrews and the Mission Evangelical Church. St Andrews can be found in Parsonage Lane, next to Barnston Hall. The nave is the oldest part of the church, probably built in 1160-70, the slightly narrower chancel in the 13th century and the gallery in the 18th century. The walls are of flint but concealed by the external rendering and internal plaster. A timber framed section at the west end containing the vestry etc. incorporates some 15th century moulded timber originally used elsewhere. The bell-cote and 18th century cupola replace ‘the steeple of Barneston' which was destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning in 1665. Many matching items in oak were installed in the church in memory of Mr Charles Livermore, of Barnston Hall, who died 1939; the reredos, two sanctuary chairs, communication rail, minister's stall, lectern, pulpit, gallery panelling, frontal chest, vestry door and frame. A plaque under the window of the north wall of the nave, records the deaths of many members of the Livermore family who at different times lived at Barnston Hall and Barnston Lodge. The ‘double headed' piscina is one of the earliest known of its kind, probably dated about 1200.
