Description	:	Following closure, the parish of St. George, Hanover Square retained ownership of the burial ground. The headstones that remained were stacked three deep next to the outer walls and the cleared open land was put to various uses. These were mostly recreational and included archery and tennis. The headstones that remained were stacked three deep next to the outer walls and the cleared open land was put to various uses. These were mostly recreational and included archery and tennis. But during the Great War (1914–1918), vegetable gardens were created and topsoil was added to separate more widely the dead from the potatoes, cabbages, and carrots. These garden allotments persisted through the Second World War (1939–1945). During night-time German air raids, several bombs fell on parts of the burial ground, further disturbing the eternal rest of the subterranean inhabitants. In 1964, despite opposition from a few MPs who were sensitive to the historical ramifications, an Act of Parliament gave permission for building. The promoters of the bill – the parish and the Church Commissioners – were now free to sell the property to developers. The only significant impediment was what to do with the remains of those who lay below ground. To make way for the foundations of four large apartment buildings, an unknown number of remains were exhumed and disposed of in three different crematoria in south London. Many ashes were simply scattered, but others were interred in West Norwood Cemetery, one of London’s “Magnificent Seven” private burial grounds; there they were tipped into a single 6.5 ft × 2.5 ft burial plot. The church had passed up on any responsibility for the dead; there were no prayers said and no memorial was raised.
