The Church was described as "newly-built" in the 1333 license, but likely operated earlier as a chapel of ease for the North Ferriby parish. The association with North Ferriby parish continued until after the Reformation (1529-1536) when King Henry VIII established the Church of England. At that time, St Mary the Virgin became a separate parish. The church building was expanded in the 1400s, but the tower collapsed in 1518, demolishing much of the west end of the building. A few decades later, King Henry VIII is reputed to have ordered that material from the collapsed tower be used to build military fortifications across the River Hull. A new tower was eventually built from brick in 1697. A major refurbishment of the building occured in 1861-63, supervised by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The entire building exterior received a new face of ashlar, and the tower was heightened and fitted with Gothic windows. Sir Scott also added the characteristic footpath that enables pedestrians to walk through St Mary's tower along the east side of Lowgate. This was a clever solution that allowed the street to be widened to the very edge of the Church tower. The opening of St Mary the Virgin Churchyard also dates to 1333 when the Archbishop's license allowed "the bodies of the dead to be buried in the Chapel or Chapel Yard according as you shall see ". Previously, parishioners had to attend the church in North Ferriby. The 1333 license identified this as somewhat problematic because parishioners "in the winter season, especially during the floods occasioned by the rains, are not able without the greatest of difficulty and very often hazard to their lives, to take their infants to be baptized, or their dead to be buried" (from a translation of the original Latin in "Old and New Hull", 1884, by T.Tindall Wildridge, MC Peck & Sons publishers, p 105). Today, the remnant of the original Churchyard is a small walled area on the south side of the church building. The original churchyard was probably larger than it is today, and will have been significantly influenced by the various reconstructions of the building. For example, a portion of the Churchyard was used to build a new tower in 1697 and more yet was used to widen Lowgate for traffic during the 1860s. Memorial slabs in the floor of the Church were mostly removed at that time and laid flat in the Churchyard. These are still in the Churchyard, but are for the most part, illegible. A few interior memorials remain to commemorate several eminent citizens, some of whom are buried inside the church. The Churchyard was probably never very big and would have run out of space as the city grew in the 17th & 18th centuries. George Milner lamented the state of affairs in 1847: "The present Churchyard contains about 750 square yards; it is frightfully crowded and the ground raised four or five feet above the street level – graves cannot be made without mangling and displacing remains" (from "Cemetery Burial; or Sepulture, Ancient And Modern" 1847, 2nd edition, by George Milner, p ix). A new burial ground, at Trippett Street, was consecrated for St Mary the Virgin parish in 1775. Milner also described overcrowding in the Trippett Street Burial Ground in his 1847 essay. As a consequence, the original Churchyard and the Trippett Street location were both formally closed to further burials in 1855. Other cemeteries in the City would have been used for burials after that time. The original St Mary the Virgin parish registers (1564-1974) have been deposited with the East Riding Archives (The Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley HU17 9BQ). A record of the interior and Churchyard monument inscriptions and those in the Trippett Street cemetery is available from the East Yorkshire Family History Society (Carnegie Heritage Centre, 342 Anlaby Road, Kingston upon Hull, HU3 6JA). The monument inscription record was made from older sources and very few memorial stones from the St Mary the Virgin burial grounds actually survive.
