A few years back, my Dad, Fred Ayres Keech, and my brother Tony were down in Lowland for Dad's School Reunion. We were told the cemetery was behind Mr. Wilmer Lewis' house in Lowland. This property is on an old... Read More	I'm not sure how to edit the name of the cemetery, but it's actually referred to as the Hopkins-Voliva Cemetery. A few years back, my Dad, Fred Ayres Keech, and my brother Tony were down in Lowland for Dad's School Reunion. We were told the cemetery was behind Mr. Wilmer Lewis' house in Lowland. We knocked on his door, and after he put on his rubber boots and grabbed his walking stick, he kindly led us to the back of his property, past his barn, and back into a thick pine forest. This property is on an old map as the Hopkins property, I assume the very same property mentioned in the will of my 3rd Great Grandfather, Robert Hopkins, a War of 1812 Veteran of Hyde County, NC. Pertaining to this land on Goose Creek Island, the will, written February 28th, 1836 and probated that May says as follows "Two youngest sons: Edward Bonner HOPKINS and Henry Holmes HOPKINS after the death of my wife to have all my land on Oyster Creek adjoining the heirs of Green CARROWAN and Joseph SIMPSON in Beaufort County (formerly, now Pamlico). The one half next to the main road & adjoining Green Carrowan, dec'd., to my son Henry Holmes HOPKINS and the other half to Edward Bonner HOPKINS which adjoins Jones BOLLE? Son: Edward B. HOPKINS one black chest". The woods were once farmland, the irrigation ditches are still visible. Amidst a swarm of yellow flies and mosquitos, Mr. Lewis, seemingly unaware of these pests that my brother and I were attempting to ward off by flailing our arms over our heads, in between swatting off the ones who had hit paydirt, led us far back into the woods with great ease for a man of his, or any age. We finally came upon the little, overgrown cemetery. The stones were hard to read because of the moss growing on them. My dad's grandpa, Robinson Lupton Hopkins' stone had been broken off at ground level by a thick pine branch that had fallen and was still on top of the toppled stone. We have talked about going back and cleaning and repairing the stones and cleaning all the underbrush out of the cemetery, but we just haven't made the 3 hour trip back there to do it yet. I hope to in the future, there are several other tombstones in the cemetery from Voliva family members. Mr. Lewis was very kind and welcomed us back anytime.
