ORLAND DEPUTY MISSING IN ACTION First Lt. Orland Deputy, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Deputy, 106 Constitution, has been missing in action in Germany since February 28 according to a War department message received this morning by his parents. Lieutenant Deputy, who left Emporia with Company B of the 137th Infantry, is an officer in a cannon company of the 121st Infantry, and now is attached to the Ninth Army. He has been wounded in action four times in the European Theater, and has been awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. ************************************** The Emporia Gazette, 20 March 1945, Tuesday LT. ORLAND DEPUTY IS REPORTED KILLED 1st Lt. Orland Deputy, 25, who was reported missing in action Saturday, this morning was reported by the War department killed in action in Germany February 28 while serving with a cannon company of the 131st Infantry attached to the Ninth Army. Born November 2, 1919, in Emporia, Lieutenant deputy attended the Emporia city schools and was graduated from Emporia high school in 1937. For the next three years he attended the College of Emporia. Both in high school and college he was a star quarterback in football, also playing basketball. Lieut. Deputy was called into the service with Company B, 137th Infantry. He was a Sergeant when the company went to Camp Robinson, Ark., for a year's training. He stayed with Company B until May, 1942, when he qualified for officer training at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in September, 1942, and was graduated from the Ft. Benning cannon school a month later. Sent to Ireland in November, 1943, Lieutenant Deputy later participated in the invasion of Normandy and was wounded four times while fighting across France and into Germany. At one time he served as acting company commander. Deputy wore the Silver Star and the Purple Heart with three clusters. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Deputy, 106 Constitution; a sister, Mrs. Richard Edwards, of Emporia; and three brothers, S-Sgt. Howard Deputy, now serving in Germany, First Lt. Eldon K. Deputy, also in Germany, and Robert Deputy, of Emporia.
